Data Athletes

This articles shows, how a personal trainer from Switzerland and India (Kerala) share insights into their career and their work with athletes. They both discuss modern training technology, the role of AI, and why personal effort remains irreplaceable despite all innovations.

Insights from a personal trainer in Switzerland

This interview provides a deep look into the journey of a personal trainer who has worked in the industry for over 10 years. Starting with group boot camps in Buchs, he later transitioned into 1-on-1 coaching and eventually opened his own gym in 2019. Today, he focuses entirely on training athletes and shares how modern technology, analytics, and AI influence performance — while emphasizing that discipline and inner drive remain irreplaceable.

Specialization and Philosophy

His passion for coaching was shaped early on by his father, a basketball coach who trained him and his brother. Although he never imagined becoming a coach himself, he later realized how much he enjoyed helping others improve — whether by losing weight, gaining speed, or increasing overall performance.
For the past six years, he has specialized exclusively in athletes, handing general gym clients to his employee so the trainer could fully focus on high-performance development.

Training Technology and AI in Sports

He relies on tools such as Spiroergometry (a combination of Ergometry and Spirometry) and InBody analysis (inbody.com) to measure VO₂ max, endurance levels, body fat, and other key physiological data. While modern technology offers powerful insights, he believes that true progress still requires discipline and “old-school” hard work.
Looking ahead, he sees AI becoming especially important in nutrition and regeneration tracking. However, technology can never replace the instinct, hunger, and mindset needed to win — those come from personality, upbringing, and experience.

Insights from a personal trainer in India

The person I interviewed is a personal trainer who has been working for over 7 years. He was inspired by Cristiano Ronaldo’ s physique and wanted to become a personal gym trainer. He works at a gym called ‘Trainer Effect“(instagram.com). He is the main personal trainer in the gym. He is a professional trainer in weightlifting and bodybuilding. He has a lot of potential, but only likes to work in small, infamous gyms. He is trying to build more success in life.

The gym is not big, as well as not small. It has good facilities and is spacious. It is not very famous and is located in Trivandrum, where the gym operates.

Specialisation and career

He is specialised in personal training for weightlifting . He has done the NSFQ Grade 4 certification. He has also participated in competitions and has won a lot of medals. Although the gym has limited facilities, he makes great use of them for himself and his clients. He always watches Ronaldo’s games, not to see football but his physique.

Training technology and AI in the gym

He uses smartwatches to track blood pressure and heart rate of his clients and by using the HealthifyMe app (healthifyme.com) analyse performance. With the help of the phone, he tracks his clients data analytics. He is not dependent on AI, he only uses it when necessary.

Reflection

This project helped us connect our personal sports experience with data driven athletes. In the past, we trained mostly without data and based on feeling and coaching. Today, analytics can show weaknesses earlier and support better decisions. We learned that technology can help athletes train smarter and improve performance. For our future analytics can play a big role in working on our weaknesses. At the same time, listening to your body is still very important. Wasan & Uros

I joined this Horse Project on September. I find it interesting to learn about new stuff. When I joined The Horse Project, I got to learn a lot of stuff. After scrolling through projects, I finally decided to join this project here. Then I did the publishing by interviewing a personal trainer. In my opinion, The Horse is a great platform for youngsters like me to learn new things. Sachu
